Newspapers should have been at the forefront in the attacks on the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill which eliminated speech against politicians in the 60 days before an election. Journalists often would be fulfilling their responsibilities to the American experiment better by reporting on issues like these that are hiding in plain sight.

Fairfax Digital launched their West Australian news site today to great fanfare and reached an all new low in logo design. Not to mention the daggy name. Seriously. It says a lot about this town.
The logo looks so half-arsed. Worst bit is that Fairfax didn’t even go for a unique site design, is the same template they use for SMH and The Age. I hope WA doesn’t get their hopes up that this will follow through on their likely “New Perspective” marketing campaign. We’ve had the Brisbane Times pushing that line for a little over 12 months. Besides John Birmingham’s blog there is little on offer other than lots of APP stories and trashtastic journalism. Very few stories get broken, depth and breadth of local news is lacking, they don’t embrace the community online or offline and the photography skills of their “multimedia journalists” is really terrible.

New Media and Digital media experts worry about how snazzy the digital content is, and if it’s cool, and if the in house team provided compelling enough content. Interactive media experts worry about if it’s interactive enough - enough clickety clicks and cool whizzbangs to be sticky and viral.
Social Media experts don’t worry about nuffin’ - they are too busy chatting, playing, arguing, discussing, debating, refining, laughing with the members to worry about if the host is providing compelling, deep, or interactive content.

Mr Kohnstamm, whose book is titled Do Travel Writers Go To Hell? said yesterday that he had worked on more than a dozen books for Lonely Planet, including their titles on Brazil, Colombia, the Caribbean, South America, Venezuela and Chile.
In one case, he said he had not even visited the country he wrote about.
“They didn’t pay me enough to go to Colombia,” he said.
“I wrote the book in San Francisco. I got the information from a chick I was dating - an intern in the Colombian consulate. Source: The Sunday Telegraph.
Disgraceful. If anyone is looking for reputable travel guides. I can suggest the Jet Lag series as being the best researched travel books on the market. With exotic destinations like Molvanîa, Phaic Tăn and San Sombrèro being expertly covered you can’t go wrong.

The URL is to Kristen Le Mesurier’s SMH blog, Innovator. It’s funny that the SMH’s blog section has such a bad rep, when there’s some really good content like Kristen’s there amongst the more clicked-upon dreck.
There’s a massive amount of reverse snobbery by regular bloggers towards any blog that is written by someone getting paid by a media company to blog. The best way to counter it is to have a personal blog, preferably before they start a for coin blogging gig so that it shows they’re down with blogging. Though, Fairfax mainly hurts their bloggers by how much they showcase their crap, et al, over the good stuff.

I like these points bestest:
#1 There is no such thing as a small story, only small thinking.
#14 Nothing beats an old fashioned pen and notepad.
#18 THE INTERNET WILL BE THE DEATH OF MEDIA AS WE KNOW IT!!! (okay not really).
#21 There is no such thing as “unbiased.”
#22 It’s better to get off the phone and out of the office.
#23 A deadline web project will always take two hours longer than I think it will.

When reading this article I actualy came up with the most fan-fucking-tastic idea. I love that about the web. Being exposed to so much exceptional missives creates an atmosphere that gets the grey matter pumping and the heart excited. Found the article via Phil Morle.
