Amid the drunken revelry and pulsing electronic music [of Web 2.0 Expo], one prominent tech-industry veteran at the party was asked exactly what Chi.mp is. “I’ll tell you what Chi.mp is. It’s venture money getting set on fire,” the jaded observer replied. Surveying the buoyant crowd, he added, “This feels a little like 1999.

The Web 2.0 economy hangs in limbo (via pete)

Do you know how much I wish there was someone else’s cash to burn on the web in Australia? I remember talking to some young guys at the Internet Industry Association’s gala dinner in maybe 2003. These were all people who went through the boom years at companies like Ninemsn, Spike, Scape, Dstore, Sydneytribe, Peakhour, et al. that almost all imploded or were scaled back. They were recalling the war stories of the dot.com era. It happened at a time when I was still at Uni so missed out on cashing in. I was mesmerised. They were truly astonishing tales. But there’s none of that happening this time. Bootstrapping is the only option and is a badge of honour and all but it is a fucking hard long road. I want me some sweet office space, foosball tables, 30 people working for me, a cocaine addiction, so many aeron chairs that we need extra office space just to house them, a launch party for every new feature we roll out, ill-conceived marketing strategies like a 400 billboard nationwide campaign before the site is even ready and TV stars on the board of directors. I think I could shred $10 million in 9 months while making it look to outsiders like a legitimate successful enterprise right up until the point my yacht sails through Sydney Heads. Would be a monumental clusterfuck. But how much fun would that be to be part of? 37 funs.
