Just looked back at my blog through the new Tumblr mosaic viewer, remember back in August 2008 when it seemed everyone had open mouth Tumblr profile photos? Good times.

Don’t you love it when when you are feeling a bit sad because of circumstances but an amazing, talented, funny, creative, caring, wonderful and cute girl does a drawing of you to cheer you up? Yep, ‘tis pretty rad. Just saying.

Just saw that my blog Bookshelf Porn is a Tumblr Staff Pick in the books category of the directory. Thanks Tumblr! Will buy y’all a beer at SXSW.

All I ask is one thing, and I’m asking this particularly of young people that watch. Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism, for the record, it’s my least favorite quality. It doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.
Excellent advice by Conan O’Brien from his last ever Tonight Show.

I really wish Zooey Deschanel would stop flirting with me via text messages. It is really making it hard to be friends with that dude from Death Cab.

End of year wrap up / top things of 2009 type blog posts are still hot yeah? Ouch. Oh well, here’s my list of the top gigs I went to this year. I said in my Fuck You 2008 post that music would be a part of my life more in oh nine and these are the live music gigs I remember most from my all kinds of excellent year…
SxSW Music Festival 2009 - Austin, Texas
My first ever SxSW lived up to every expectation. So many levels of awesome. Too much music in 4 days to ever describe and give it justice. Am going back in 2010. Enough said.
Philadelphia Grand Jury - Bon Amici, Toowoomba
In a tiny coffee shop that I usually get breakfast at when seeing dad on weekends, the Philly Jays played an unfreakinbelievably wizard set between the Yacht Club DJs and Dappled Cities on a Friday night when Woomba’s very few hipster indie kids came out to play.
The Whitlams - Tivoli, Brisbane
I originally gave my tickets away to this gig because I thought I’d be in Sydney. But then on the night when I was in Brisbane Town I ended up walking up to the door to see if I could buy a ticket. The guy in the ticket booth told me that it was sold out but then said someone dropped off her ticket as she couldn’t go. He tried to find it but couldn’t so stamped my hand and told me to go in. I said thanks, gave him a hug and then had one of my fave Whitlam gigs ever. Tim, Jak and Terapai played the entire Eternal Nightcap album from start to finish. Was a super special night for such a long time fan.
Port O’Brien - Laneway Festival, Brisbane
Being on stage with a hundred or so other fans singing I Woke Up Today in the middle of a hot Saturday afternoon was the perfect start to my first Laneway that also featured Yves Klein Blue, Architecture in Helsinki and The Temper Trap as fanfreakingawesome highlights.
Lily Allen - Tivoli, Brisbane
The one celebrity that represented my ideal girl. Sweet on the outside but sharp and bitter on the inside. ‘Twas a fantastic show but was kind of a little bit more about the crush. Since then though she’s hated on the internets so obvs isn’t the girl for me anymore but was still a fave gig of ‘09.

Gratuitous Picture Of Yourself Wednesday - Bearded Edition
This is me auctioning and MCing at the Digital Angels charity event last week that raised nearly $4000 for Angel Flight. The beard was because I could never find the opportunity to “Go the Mo” for Movember with presentations, events and generally being scared of what the moustache only look would be like. So instead I enjoyed the laziness of not shaving for a month by growing a beard. Doing the auction was super fun. I used to be an auctioneer way back when I was at Uni and it had been five or so years since I last did even a charity auction.

Though a friend who is ten years younger than me and fifty times more intelligent has some sage counsel.

This is a balloon poodle I made yesterday for my mate’s girlfriend.
I just want friends and family to know that if this professional internet enthusiast gig doesn’t work out, life will be ok, I know how to make balloon animals.
Though my life skills are lacking because I’m still unsure about how to argue/fight/reason with people like the cranky humanities graduate who yelled at me yesterday because I said the four year (part time) balloon animals degree I studied was worth more to me than my three year arts degree. It’s the truth. But I was left a little dumbfounded by the humanities graduate’s crankiness on a Sunday afternoon and had no retort. Next time maybe I’ll do better at responding in kind. Or I might just make her a balloon flower instead (‘tis obvs technically not a balloon animal but I’m sure I’ll manage).
